Mind Body Life addresses common mental health issues facing college students today and offers resources and information that connect students to local resources and FREE counseling for these areas of care. These are not the only issues college students face, nor are these issues only experienced by young people in higher education. But college students face a unique set of challenges due to academics, campus life, and everything else (finances, personal relationships, work/life balance…) that goes along with being a student at this time, in this culture.
Some mental issues share overlapping symptoms, and often there are connections between one issue and another, so it’s important to see a professional to assess what is going on. The SF Counseling Center can help with a variety of issues and situations, so contact them with any concern—not just the five discussed on these pages.
Stress & Anxiety
It’s normal for people to be “stressed out” when dealing with the pressure of school or work or a financial situation. But symptoms of stress go away when the stressful situation is resolved. Anxiety, however, is the presence of persistent, excessive worries that don’t go away even in the absence of a stressor.

Everyone experiences low mood from time to time, especially when life’s circumstances are less than cheery. But depression is more than feeling down; it’s a feeling of sadness or loss of interest that persists even when everything is going well.
Learn MoreTrauma
Whether the traumatic event happened yesterday or 15 years ago, the body remembers. Trauma that isn’t processed can lead to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is common among military members and veterans, but it can affect anyone. Physiological responses vary and may include emotional and physical symptoms.

Thoughts and feelings related to the body can be as varied and unique as the human body itself. Regardless of the issue, however, the way we feel about our body often becomes the way we feel about ourselves. What’s more, our self-confidence and self-esteem can affect every area of life.
